The Official portraits of the two youngest saints not martyr of the Catholic Church, Francisco and Jacinta Marto were disclosed today in Fatima; their representation is based on the photos used for their beatification in 2000; the artistic options throw light on the psychology of the two saints, the words of Postulation of Francisco and Jacinta Marto.

“Jacinta is looking straight into the observer’s eyes, in a posture of interpellation; Francisco raises the eyes, in an eminently contemplative attitude”, says the note of Postulation regarding the images. The latter were entrusted to the painter Sílvia Patrício, and will be placed on the façade of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosario of Fatima during the canonization ceremony.

As a difference with the 1917 photo used as a base for the painting of the two images of Saint Francisco Marto and Saint Jacinta Marto, the garments on the pictures are colored, this was done according to the results of ethnological researches made by the painter.

On the façade of the Basilica, the positioning of the two seers is also different: Jacinta Marto will appear first, “as first annunciator of the events of Fatima”.

The rosary and lamps they hold are the clearest attributes of the saints; the painter also painted a halo (which represents sanctity) above each, both chiseled like pieces of jewelry and presenting different symbols: in Francisco’s halo, the silhouette of the Angel of Fatima and the Eucharistic species; and in Jacinta’s, the figures of the Pope and of the Virgin Mary, represented with her Immaculate Heart.

Sílvia Patrício, 43 year-old, was born in Vincennes, France, and is a plastic artist and a graduate from the Escola Superior de Arte e Design of Caldas da Rainha.

Her first individual exhibition, “O Outro lado” (The other side), dates back to 1997; since then she presented various works, most of them in Leiria, but also in places like Salamanca, Paris (Casa de Portugal), Coimbra, Porto and Cascais.
